History of Guruvayoor

The history of Guruvayoor Temple goes back to Dwaparayuga. It is believed that during period krishna is believed to have instructed his foremost disciple Udhava to reinstall the idol of Lord Vishnu which was installed by him at Dwaraka.

Then the idol was collected from from the submerged Dwaraka by Brahaspathi and Vayu who after having travelled to various places finally discovered a lake dotted with lotus flowers in Kerala. Vishwakarma, the architect of Gods, constructed the temple and the image of Lord Vishnu (Lord Krishna) was installed
by Guru and Vayu. The place was named ‘Guruvayupura’ to fulfill the wish of Lord Shiva as the temple was founded by both Guru and Vayu. In due course of time, Guruvayurpura became Guruvayoor. Guruvayoor or the Dwarka of South is rightly called Maha Kshetra because the temple is visited by a huge number of devotees to seek Lord’s blessings.
